Thousands of years ago, God delivered over a million people from abject slavery. Hail, boils, flies, frogs, blood, and other dreadful plagues fell upon those who had held them in bondage. Then, on a single night, they left—a vast caravan of men, women, children, flocks, and herds. In a few months, they arrived at the borders of the promised land. But what was to be a wonderful moment of triumph turned into a bitter withdrawal. Hundreds of Israelites died… For forty years, the children of Israel were forced to wander in the wilderness. 1 Corinthians 10:1-5

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
